You Can Grow

Paul’s second letter to the church in Thessalonica is relatively short– only three chapters total, with chapter one being a mere twelve verses. Therefore, I don't have much to say to you today… giving you a quick and simple word, then I’m out of your hair. Firstly, despite the persecution the church suffered, Paul thanked God that the Thessalonians faith had grown and that their love abounded towards one another.
“We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other.”
(2 Thessalonians 1:3)
What’s the message for us? Our faith can grow and our love can abound. This is a recurring message in Paul’s letters– that the saints grew in their faith and love in the face of grave adversity. We can do the same.
You can increase in the things of God and be blessed because of it. Jesus compares faith to a mustard seed multiple times in scripture. It is one of the world’s tiniest seeds, yet it grows, multiples, and stands at heights far above what it did in its infancy.
Likewise, your faith can soar at heights far above what it did when you first came to the Lord. Paul said their faith grew, not a tiny bit, not somewhat, but exceedingly. Your faith and love can be much greater than you ever imagined. It can be greater than it was even at the beginning of this year. You can grow excessively in the Lord!
And not only can you grow, but you can do so in the face of tribulation. In the face of spiritual or physical sickness, emotional despair, financial woes, mental fog, whatever the trial, you can still abound in your faith, just as the Thessalonians did.
Paul continued the chapter by reminding the believers that their enemies– those who oppose God and oppresses His people– will face a day of God’s vengeance. They will receive wrath, but God’s people will receive rest. Lord’s willing, I’ll dive into this more next week. But today, I just wanted to let you know that you can grow even more than what you have already grown… we all can.
You can grow in your faith and in your love. And I pray, in the name of Jesus, that you will abound in Christ. That you will grow despite your circumstances. That you will produce fruits of the Spirit, even in what may appear to be a dry and unproductive land.
That’s all I have for you today– an easy 1, 2, 3, A, B, C message. You can grow. It’s been proven by what we read in the scriptures. If God made the Thessalonians abound despite their predicament, I trust that He’ll do the same for us. So, may we both grow evermore to heights unimaginable in the Lord.
Until next time, may God bless you and keep you. Take care.
