My Favorite Bible Verse

Y’all!

I love Colossians 3:4. It embodies what the Christian walk is truly about or what it should be about. And to be honest, I don’t know if I can 100% say it will always be my favorite Bible verse … there’s so many good verses and texts to choose from. Romans 8 in its entirety is probably my favorite chapter … but I also love the Book of Joshua and Genesis …

So, I don’t know man! It’s hard to say. What’s your favorite Bible verse? What’s your favorite Bible story or chapter? For now, I’d say Colossians 3:4 takes the prize for my favorite Bible verse. It reads:

“When Christ, who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”

My Lord!

What a verse. This verse is different. Yes, Jesus gave His life for us. Yes, we are to give our life to Him– to do away with our will and desires for His. But that’s not what this verse says. This verse says “Christ who is your life ...”

This goes beyond giving our life to Him. This is about making Him our life. If I were to give you my attention, then there’s a possibility that my attention can still be allocated to other things. You would only have my attention for as long as I choose to give it to you.

But if I make you my attention, then you are my focus. There’s no room for anything to take away my focus from you because you have become my attention. If something attempts to enter my life, it must be worked around you. If it conflicts or disrupts my primary focus, I’d have to cut it loose … because I’ve opted to not just give you my attention, I’ve made you my attention.

This is where some people may think you’ve gone too far. This is the limit to which some people do not attain. They love Christ, they say. They want Christ in their life, but they don’t want Christ to become their life.

This is the point that some people may say is borderline obsession. This is where people call you a Jesus freak or say that it’s not that serious. They think it’s better to give Christ your attention, but to make Him your attention … that’s a bit much. Yeah sure, have Christ in your life, but to make Him your life? Many opt not to do that.

This is why I love this verse. Because it draws a line. It separates casual believers from devoted ones. Christ being in our life is one thing. When Jesus is in our life, we allocate our time and attention to Him as we see fit. We allow Him into spaces in our lives we when it's convenient.

But the more we abide in Christ, He gradually begins to bleed in every crevice of our existence. We mature from giving Christ our attention into making Him our attention. We graduate from allowing Christ to be in our lives to making Christ our life.

As the singer Tye Tribbett sang, Christ becomes “Everything”. He becomes everything to us. He’s our joy. Our peace. Our hope. He’s, for sure, all of these things in our life. But Christ isn’t just these things in our life, Christ is our life.

And if Christ is your life, nothing in this world should bring more joy to you than abiding in Him. There should be no greater expectation or joy that you have than the hope of seeing your life, Jesus Christ, appear and you also appearing with Him in glory.

Some may say it’s obsession.

Some may say it’s you being overly religious.

But if something is your life, then it means everything to you and your entire life is centered around it, and it alone. So, is Christ in your life or has Christ become your life? Whatever the answer, may God bless you to become more and more of what He has envisioned for you.

Dear reader, may God bless you and keep you. Until next time, take care.
