The Mysteriously Good Side of God

Towards the end of Colossians 1, the Apostle Paul mentioned how God had a secret. For generations, God had a plan for saving humanity from our sinfulness, but He kept it a secret. It was a mystery, "the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." (Colossians 1:26-27)
God's fatherly side is displayed through His secrecy. Gifting us salvation, but keeping the gift a secret until the glory of Christ was revealed, is a a parental characteristic. Isn't that what many fathers, mothers, and loved ones are doing right now? Many people are planning on giving their children great gifts this week, but they are doing it in secrecy.
Part of the thrill and joy of receiving gifts is the mystery in not knowing exactly what you will receive. Likewise, a large component of giving gifts is surprising our loved ones with something special. And if the gift is coming from someone who loves and knows us well, then we know the gift will be good.
We are all made in the image of our Father; therefore, we understand the love in giving gifts and the idea of surprising our loved ones with good things. There's a certain joy we experience in keeping the gifts a secret. This same dynamic occurs between us and our heavenly Father.
It must've brought God so much joy knowing the amazing gift that He had waiting for us. For all those years, God must've been downright giddy in heaven. How joyful God must have been knowing that He was going to free us from our burdens of sin? How excited God must've been knowing He was about to give the world the best thing ever, a way back to glory with Him. Freedom from sorrows, pain, and destruction, despite our wrong.
But what's also really awesome is that although the gift of salvation through Christ was a mystery, God gave hints throughout the Old Testament. In Isaiah 11, God gave us hints about how He would send a descendant of Jesse and how this Man would be full of power, wisdom, understanding, and much more. Isaiah 9 tells us, "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)
So, God was dropping hints to us about the goodness that was to come. And although the mystery of salvation is now fully known, God still has some mysteriously good things up His sleeve. Hints of what heaven will be like are revealed to us in Scripture. The building of God's tabernacle in the Old Testament is a "copy and shadow" of God's tabernacle in heaven. (Hebrews 8:5). And we see how majestic heaven is described in Revelation 21 ... the jeweled encrusted foundations and walls, the rivers that appear as crystal clear glass... But most importantly, we will finally be with the Lord face to face in all of His glory... Glory so bright there's no need for a sun or moon.
Even what we will be, as in our new spiritual bodies, is still a mystery to us, "Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is." (I John 3:2 NKJV)
Look at God still keeping secrets... Look at Him still not fully revealing all the goodness in store for us.
He's just so (deep sigh).... good!
And even in the earth, doesn't God often surprise us with His grace and mercy? Doesn't God reveal His love to us through His gifting and favor? God has utterly surprised me more than once. The spiritual blessings He pours out on us. The earthly blessings and surprises of restored healing and restoration.
Even something as small as a comforting hug or something as big as a life changing opportunity or being transformed by the life altering Word of God ... These things show just how much God loves to surprise His children with good things. Walking with God is a life full of mystery but glory is sprinkled throughout our lives if we pay close attention to Him and His Word.
We will not fully know all God has in store for us until He decides to reveal. And honestly, some times we don't like the mysteries. We want to know what to expect. We want to know all there is to know. But if we trust that God is a good Father, then whatever He has in store for us, we can trust that it is good. It will be for our good (Romans 8:28).
That's all I have for you today. Just thought I'd share how I admire the mysterious side of God and how His secrecy is a good thing because He is a good Father.
May God continue to bless us all with His mysteriously good ways. Until next time, God bless you and keep you. Take care.
