Put It To Death! Or Be Like Saul...

Let's not tarry and jump right into the text. Colossians 3:5 says,"Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."
Put it to death. We are all aware of the severity death. There is no coming back to life on this side, once we leave these bodies. It's final.
Likewise, the command is to put these things to death. We aren't to put these things down for a nap. We aren't to hibernate these things for a season. We are to put it to death.
This reminds me of Saul in 1 Samuel 15. Saul was given similar instructions as we are given in Colossians. God told Saul in 1 Samuel 15:3 "Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys."
The command was clear, no? But when the Prophet Samuel came to King Saul after the battle, Samuel asked Saul, 'Why do I hear sheep and cattle in my ear?' Saul's response?
"The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.” (1 Samuel 15:15 NIV)
Mmm ...
What part of all didn't Saul understand? The command was to put everything to death. Likewise, what part of put these things to death do we not understand? The command given to us is just as clear as the command that was given to Saul.
But free will allows us to do whatever we want. Yet, all choices have consequences. For Saul, he was rejected as King of Israel because he failed to put to death all the things he was instructed to destroy. " ... Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king." (1 Samuel 15:23).
And if we fail to put to death the things listed in Colossians 3, we will face a dire consequence as well. Colossians 3:5-6 states because of sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, "The wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience."
Although it took a while before David took Saul's place as king, eventually God's promise came to pass. Saul was removed as king and David, a man after God's heart, took the throne.
Likewise, although it has taken quite a bit of time for the return of Jesus, He is coming. God will keep his promise of wrath on those who choose to live in rebellion. But He will also keep His promise to those who choose to put to death the things of the flesh and walk in the Spirit instead. Life and life more abundantly is promised to us.
Peace, joy, and everlasting love is promised to us both now and forever more. Dead reader, the message for today is simple: Put It To Death! Or Be Like Saul ...
May this message motivate us all to live for Christ and die to self. May God bless you and keep you. Until next time, take care.
